- Edgar Snow was an American journalist who traveled to northern China in Yenan to meet Mao Zedong. The Communists told him that they were creating written accounts of the Long March on their own. Edgar descirbes the events of the Long March in great detail. He talked about the many different lines of fire and all of the little battles that took place. The red Army lost many during their journey. They started with about 80,000 and ended with 8,000. He notes that the Red Army was forced to adopt new fighting tactics becaue of their loss. He also talked about the crossing of the Tatu River. He noted that it was very important because if the Red Army would have failed there, they most likely would have been exterminated.
